The Immortal Hulk: Or is he both?

Written by Al Ewing

Art by Joe Bennett

Color by Paul Mounts

Creeping out of the events of Civil War 2 Bruce Banner a.k.a The Hulk is thought to be dead. However sightings of him have been reported throughout the country.

The first volume of this unique horror take on a classic Marvel hero plays with the idea of the man in the mirror and truly embracing or hiding your real self. The majority of the story follows Bruce and his alter ego as they investigate the Walking Ghost phase of gamma radiation poisoning that has infected the small town of Turango. As Bruce investigates the primary cause of his mutation, his past comes back to haunt him leading to a discovery that may explain is dark, twisted rebirth.

Everything from the writing to the art to the horror quotes between issues distinguishes this Hulk run from the rest in this character’s history. As someone who normally doesn’t have much interest in the Hulk, I truly enjoyed this horror take on the character. The psychology of dual personalities, playing with the source of Bruce’s real struggles and the pairing of the big green guy with opponents with similar origins (albeit with disastrous results instead) kept me on the edge of my seat until I finished. If they fully embraced a DC Black Label type rating this run would be pretty close to a perfect horror comic. Regardless, I will be picking up the next volume. 4.2/5⭐️-Eric
