Monstress Volume 1: Awakening is a brilliant invention of mythology and Asian culture. Liu and Takeda create a world where monsters exist but the worst and most vile ones are human.
Monstress is set in a matriarchal world inspired by 20th century Asian culture. The story follows Maika Halfwolf, a young woman that shares a psychic and somewhat physical link with an ancient monster. In the world around her there is a war going on between the Arcanics, which is a race of magical creatures that sometimes pass as humans, and the Cumaea which is an order (cult) of sorceresses who consume the Arcanics to fuel their power.
Maika is an Arcanic that looks human is set on avenging her dead arm and learning about the monster that has been awakening out of her severed left arm.
The story is one that holds great premise into becoming a staple in the dark fantasy drama. The series is very mature (some nudity, gore and some disturbing imagery) and is not recommended for young children.
I truly enjoy both the story and especially the art. The art and imagery is a beautiful combination of the darker scenery in the Dark Souls franchise as well as the more mythical/magical aura that the Witcher can present. It is important to note though that the story can get a bit confusing due to the amount of World-building and lore that is being crammed into the 192 pg volume. Overall it is a beautiful new dark fantasy series worth checking out.
