So as someone who is not well versed in Spawn I found the landmark issue of the titular Image Comics character to be jam packed and heavily entertaining. McFarlane and his league of extraordinary comic artists/writers use the landmark issue to change the direction of Spawn completely for the next 300 issues.
The world of Spawn has changed and so have the sides. As Spawn‘s powers have now grown and changed, he is no longer interested in fighting alone. Spawn is now building his own army to fight against the forces of hell and heaven. Hints drop throughout the issue of who his allies will be and tidbits are revealed that heaven and hell may join together to take the hellspawn down.
The art while brutal and sometimes gory is astonishing. Each chapter (5 chapters total) is pencilled by someone different and every panel fits in extremely well with the story. While I am bias towards Jerome Opeña‘s art (Seven to Eternity is brilliant) the other art does the demon justice and breathes new life into him. I will definitely be trying to pick up past and future issues as this story has me hooked!!
