Spiderman: Blue
Written by Jeph Loeb
Art by Tim Sale
Color by Steve Buccellato
In this masterpiece of love and grief you follow Peter Parker telling his former and first love Gwen Stacy how much he meant to her and how much he regrets not being able to be with her as much as he did. It is a bittersweet perfection of how one grieves and reminisces over the times with their passed loved ones.
Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale make their staple in Spiderman history with making one of the most emotional runs since the Death of Gwen Stacy. In commemoration to classic Spiderman, Tim Sale puts his spin on John Romita, Sr.‘s legendary art and achieves a style that both honors the legend and makes it his own. Additionally what makes this story unique is how they weave Mary Jane Watson (most prominent romantic partner) into Peter’s life and how the true main characters are MJ and Gwen.
Even the minor characters in this run have moments to shine. The dynamic of Flash’s obsession with Spiderman, the tense relationship between Peter/Harry/Norman and their alter egos, and even the age old conflict between elders and youth in the two iterations of Vulture are given light and finesse that add layers to the story.
Overall, Spiderman: Blue deserves its rank among the best Spiderman stories in the history of the character. It shares the pedestal of my favorite comics with none other than Kraven’s Last Hunt. 4.8/5⭐️ -Eric
