Even on a cloudy/misty day this is one of the best ocean kayaking experiences that even a beginner can do. With minimal waves it is quite easy for a beginner to navigate through the bay.
Located upon the Strait of Juan de Fuca on the Northern Coast of the Olympic Peninsula, Freshwater Bay's salt water provides many different sea habitats to thrive. As you approach Bachelor Rock you will wade through vast kelp forests. Along with the immense vegetation, it is possible to see bald eagles (there was one nestled on top of Bachelor rock when we went), sea lions and sea otters. Make a left turn and paddle along the coastal cliffs for a magnificent view of the varying coloration of the sandstone cliffs (correct me if I'm wrong?). Along the cliffs you can see barnacles, sea urchins and even starfish. On a clear day you can even see Vancouver which is only 12 miles across the bay (though it is not recommended to paddle across due to the current).
This was definitely the best kayaking trip and tour I've ever experienced. We went through Adventure Through Kayaking that took care of transportation to the bay and kayaks to use as well as providing us with a fantastic tour guide (Thank you Fitz!!). Highly recommend to anyone visiting the Olympic Peninsula. -Eric
